Up Evaluation of Summerfruit Cultivars 1996/97
Mike Malone and Nicola Hall - HortResearch, Hawkes Bay Research Centre

Introduction

This report details the results of 51 cultivar evaluations over the 1996/97 season. 25 peach cultivars, 19 nectarines, 5 plums and 2 plumcots. The report includes details of HortResearch selections and cultivars and new commercial and standard cultivars.

Materials and Methods

Observations of cultivars were carried out on 2-3 trees of each cultivar in the stonefruit variety block (52/1) situated at Havelock North Research Orchard (HNRO).

The soil type of this block is Hastings silt loam with a slight grade of decreasing drainage north to south in the block.

Trees are spaced 5m * 2.5m and trained to a free form central-leader system. Standard commercial practices are followed for pruning and thinning trees.

Flower and tree data were recorded from August 1996 to April 1997. When fruit reached local market maturity, as judged by change in background colour and firmness, a 20 fruit sample was harvested and held at ambient for approximately 3 days before being evaluated. External and internal fruit characteristics were recorded using the main descriptor form.

Firmness measurements were recorded using an Effegi penetrometer with an 8mm tip. Soluble solids content (%SS) measurements were made with a Atago refractometer.

Seasonal Comparison

Over the flowering period ( Aug-Sep), HNRO experienced a mild spring with few frosts being recorded this season. Generally, maturities were advance by 7 days or more when compared to last season.
