Mealybugs are a quarantine pest for some markets and postharvest control is an option which can contribute to ensuring a crop is free of these pests. Postharvest control can also play a useful role in the management of mealybugs in organic production. Organic production relies mainly on biological control through natural enemies and there are few preharvest options for assisting the predators and parasitoids.
Cool storage in air or CA can assist mealybug control if maintained for 4-6 weeks. Experiments with large numbers of obscure mealybugs have shown that 42 days air storage at 0°C provides complete mortality of both immatures and adults. An apple washer, which is installed in some packhouses, can also be very effective in removing mealybugs from the fruit.
