| Shoot distortion by leafcurl plum aphids, Brachycaudus helichrysi |
|---|
Feeding by leafcurl plum aphids causes the typical symptoms of aphid damage - distortion and curling of the shoots and associated leaves. Extension growth of shoots is often reduced. Honeydew produced by all aphid species is a substrate for the development of sooty mould and can contaminate fruits and leaves. Many aphid species transmit viruses. Leafcurl plum aphid is primarily a pest of European and Japanese plums but has also been recorded from nectarine, peach, and apricot. Its secondary hosts (in summer) include clovers and plants of the family Compositae, such as chrysanthemums.
