Extension growth of shoots is often reduced and blossoms may also be damaged. Black cherry aphid can also cause reduction in fruit size. Honeydew produced by all aphid species is a substrate for the development of sooty mould and can contaminate fruits and leaves. Many aphid species transmit viruses. Black cherry aphid is primarily a pest of sweet cherries but also attacks sour cherries. Its secondary hosts (in summer) include plants in the mustard family and weeds such as speedwells.
