Hover flies lay their eggs close to aphid colonies. The larvae or maggots which hatch from the eggs are important predators of aphids, particularly those which attack the growing shoots of stonefruit trees in spring. The adult flies feed on pollen and they can be encouraged by planting flowering herbs in the understorey and headlandsof the orchard.
