| Woolly apple aphid predators - ladybirds |
|---|
Ladybirds eat a wide variety of aphids and both the adult beetles and the larvae are voracious predators. The ladybird species shown here, as well as the sevenspotted ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, have been recorded feeding on woolly apple aphid in New Zealand. The importance of this predation in the control of woolly apple aphid is not known. The twospotted ladybird was accidentally introduced to New Zealand and was first recorded in 1872. Most other ladybird species found in orchards are also accidental introductions.
