Citrophilus mealybug - Population dynamics for all species combined
Longtailed mealybug
Obscure mealybug

The population dynamics of mealybugs on pipfruit have not been studied in New Zealand. Population studies of longtailed mealybug in Australia have indicated that the availability of living sites on the trees is the main factor limiting population size. Mealybugs displaced from these sites by overcrowding were susceptible to harsh climatic conditions, such as high temperatures and low humidity. More recent research confirms the susceptibility of crawlers to hot dry conditions during their dispersive phase, resulting in high mortality. However, both natural enemies and climate are now considered important in the mortality of older mealybugs, and outbreaks of longtailed mealybugs have occurred following the destruction of their natural enemies. Natural enemies have been shown to cause high mortality of longtailed mealybug in Australia, its area of origin, and to play a key role in population dynamics.
