| Oystershell scale - classical biological control in New Zealand |
|---|
Oystershell scale was introduced to New Zealand without its full complement of natural enemies. Classical biological control involves introducing these exotic parasites and predators in an attempt to reduce pest populations. Although oystershell scale has never been a direct target of such a programme, its control has benefited, or may yet benefit, from natural enemies introduced for control of San Jose scale (see Table). Further introductions of natural enemies are warranted for oystershell scale.
