| Chemical control of mealybugs - Resistance to insecticides |
|---|
Obscure mealybug in New Zealand has a history of developing resistance to insecticides. There are no known instances of resistance to insecticides in the other mealybug species which attack pipfruit. The recorded cases are as follows
| Mealybug species | Insecticide | Evidence from: | Resistance factor | Cross resistance: |
| Obscure mealybug, P. viburni | DDT | Field | Not known | |
| (Hawkes Bay) | parathion-methyl | Field - anecdotal | Not known | |
| chlorpyrifos | Laboratory and field | 24 fold | possibly to prothiofos |
A resistance management programme has been developed for mealybugs in New Zealand.
There are also reports of mealybugs developing resistance to organophosphate insecticides overseas, particularly to the organophosphate parathion.
