Natural Product Insecticides
There are a wide variety of natural product insecticides
with differing modes of action. Spinosyns are among the
metabolites of fermentation by a bacterium Saccharopolyspora
spinosa. Spinosyns are insecticidal. The registered chemical
is:
Spinosad (Success NaturolyteTM). This natural product is highly insecticidal, particularly to Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) such as leafrollers, but has low mammalian toxicity and is selective, allowing the survival of many natural enemies of insects. It kills insects pests by contact and/or ingestion and susceptible stages cease feeding almost immediately after exposure. They usually die within 3 days. Eggs of some insects are also susceptible if sprayed directly. Intoxicated insects tremble and lose coordination, leading to paralysis and death. Spinosad is systemic to the extent of moving through leaves (translaminar). It belongs to the chemical group 'macrocyclic lactones' and degrades rapidly in soil.
