Woolly apple aphid colonies cause galls on stems, branches and roots and infect the calyx of fruits. Wool associated with the colonies is often the first symptom seen on stems or fruit. Honeydew is produced by the aphids on leaves, stems and fruits and this provides a substrate for the growth of sooty mould.
