go back Glyptapanteles demeter adults - a parasitoid of leafrollers

This braconid wasp is a common parasitoid of leafrollers throughout New Zealand. The female lays its eggs in the young leafroller caterpillars. Several wasps develop inside a single caterpillar which continues to grow and develop, often not dying until fully grown and after the much smaller parasitoid wasp larvae have already emerged from its body. These larvae then spin cocoons and a group of adult wasps may later be seen as they emerge alongside their host.
