| Noctuid caterpillars (false loopers) |
|---|
The most common noctuid caterpillar causing damage in apple orchards is Graphania mutans. Egg batches are laid on the trees and the hatching caterpillars disperse to feed on the foliage for a short time before descending to the ground cover. Agrotis ipsilon caterpillars occur infrequently on apple trees.
