go back San Jose scale females and settled nymphs

San Jose scale can form colonies on the surface of pipfruit. An adult female can be seen at the top of the picture (horizontal arrow) and there are numerous young settled nymphs. The more elongate individuals are young males, which eventually emerge from their scales as winged adults. The scale cover of a young female has been turned over to show the soft, round, yellow body of the insect beneath.
